COURTESY OF CUPID, by Nashae Jones, Aladdin, Jan. 2, 2024, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 10 and up)

A girl uses her ability to make people fall in love in Courtesy of Cupid, an upper middle-grade rom-com by Nashae Jones.

Erin Johnson’s thirteenth birthday unfolds like any other day, from her mom’s quirky and embarrassing choice of outfit to racing her nemesis, Trevor Jin, to the best seat in class—front row, center. But her gifts this year include something very out of the ordinary: magical powers.

Erin discovers her mysterious father is actually the love god Cupid and she’s inherited his knack for romance. It’s not the most useful ability for an overachiever with lofty academic and extracurricular goals…or is it? Erin desperately wants to be elected president of the Multicultural Leadership Club, and as usual, Trevor is her fiercest competition. He’s never backed down from a challenge before, but if Erin makes him fall in love with her, maybe he’d drop out of the race and let her win.

With her magical pedigree, wrapping Trevor around her finger is a snap, and having him around all the time is a small price to pay for victory. But without their cutthroat rivalry bringing out the worst in each other, Erin realizes Trevor may not be as bad as she thought, and suddenly her first foray into love gets a lot more complicated… —Synopsis provided by Aladdin

Courtesy of Cupid is geared toward tweens who are drawn to romance but aren’t ready for full-blown YA romance. The cover does make it clear this is a romance, but it reads a little older than 13-year-olds.

Author Nashae Jones has a warm writing style that immediately draws you in. Her concept is sound and believable while still having an air of magic.

Erin is a bit tightly strung, and her need to be perfect is a touch overwhelming. Thankfully, there’s a lot more to her. And there’s a lot more to Trevor, as well, which Erin discovers when she finally opens herself up to the possibility. The push and pull between them is the highlight.

There are a few elements to the book that feel a bit forced — the campaign to be elected president of the Multicultural Leadership Club is just way to big and intense for what it is. I don’t think it’s a gamechanger, but this — rather than the magical powers — is what’s challenges belief.

Despite the age of the characters, Courtesy of Cupid does read a little bit older, making it a good choice for 11- to 13-year-olds.

ALL WE NEED IS LOVE AND A REALLY SOFT PILLOW! by Peter H. Reynolds and Henry Rocket Reynolds, Orchard Books, Oct. 3, 2023, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

All We Need is Love and a Really Soft Pillow! By Peter H. Reynolds and Henry Rocket Reynolds, explores what truly matters.

Poppy: All we need is love.

Little One: And a pillow.

Poppy: Yes, a pillow, but that is all we need.

This heartfelt celebration of love follows Poppy and Little One as they discuss all the things they need in life like a really good pillow or a roof over their heads but most important of all, love. Despite the challenges they face as a storm sweeps away their home, this duo never lose their optimism because in the end they know that all they truly need is love . . . and each other. —Synopsis provided by Orchard Books

All We Need is Love and a Really Soft Pillow! Is one of those books that kids will love from the outset. The adorable characters set in soft hues immediately draw you in. And the bold, graphic text sets the tone for ongoing conversations.

This tender look at love helps little ones understand the basics through art and repetition. Its conversational tone will also make it a book parents and kids can easily read together. The suggested age range for All We Need is Love and a Really Soft Pillow! is 4-8, but I think kids as young as 3 would enjoy sitting with a loved one and reading together.

It shines through the water like its own brilliant sun. It goes round and round with no beginning and no end. Because a mother’s love for a child is always there, warm and soft, broad and tender. —Synopsis provided by Philomel Books

This gentle read is a great starting point for conversations with children. By giving readers tangible examples, they are able to “put a face to name” so to speak. Recognizing love opens the door to recognizing other emotions, too. I can see it being a great conversation starter for older kids as well.

LOVE CAN COME IN MANY WAYS, by Terry Pierce and Suzy Ultman, Chronicle Books, Oct. 20, 2020, Board Book, $12.99 (ages 0-3)

TINY T. REX AND THE PERFECT VALENTINE, by Jonathan Stutzman and Jay Fleck, Chronicle Books, Dec. 29, 2020, Board Book, $7.99 (ages 2-4)

Valentine’s Day is coming, which means showing the ones you love how much they mean to you, so Tiny has decided to make the perfect Valentine for his best friend Pointy.

Not only does this charming book show persistence, but it shows the true meaning of friendship as well. Though geared for toddlers, 5- and 6-year-olds will relate, and won’t mind reading it to younger siblings.

YOU’RE MY LITTLE BABY: A TOUCH-AND-FEEL BOOK, by Eric Carle, Little Simon, Aug. 25, 2020, Board Book, $7.99 (ages 2-4)

This interactive board book features all the elements parents and children love about Eric Carle books — bright colors, stylized animals and texture. Gentle rhymes make this one a pleasure to read aloud, too.

BUNNY ROO AND DUCKLING TOO, by Melissa Marr and Teagan White, Nancy Paulsen Books, Jan. 19, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 1-3)

When you touched the water, you squawked and splashed.
I thought you’d become a duckling, so I jumped in to play with you.

It’s hard to keep up with an energetic toddler, and as an adoring mom tries to, she describes all the frisky young animals her little one reminds her of–from a hopping frog and a squirming snake, to her adorable cuddly bunny.

This adorable companion book to Bunny Roo, I Love You is just the sort of book to read while snuggling up with a child. Simple text and sweet illustrations make this a book you’ll want to read again and again.

ME & MAMA, by Cozbi A. Cabrera, Denene Millner Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers; Illustrated edition, Aug. 25, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

On a rainy day when the house smells like cinnamon and Papa and Luca are still asleep, when the clouds are wearing shadows and the wind paints the window with beads of water, I want to be everywhere Mama is.

This Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honor book follows a mother and her adoring daughter as they set out for the day. The simplest of things mean so much and bring such happiness. This deserving award-winner is a joy to read.

SHARE SOME KINDNESS, BRING SOME LIGHT, by Apryl Stott, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers; Illustrated edition, Oct. 27, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Bear is sad. All the other animals think he’s mean because he’s so big. But his human friend, Coco, offers to help him. Coco shares her grandmother’s advice: “When life gets dark as winter’s night, share some kindness, bring some light.”

They decide to bake cookies to “share some kindness” and make lanterns to “bring some light.” But when the cookies and lanterns don’t work, they must look for another way to win over the other animals. And while they’re at it, Coco and Bear just might discover that kindness is a gift that only comes from the heart.

It’s worth buying this book for the illustrations alone. Their lovely detail is mirrored by thoughtful text that encourages readers to “give away love instead of gifts.” This is a book I can’t wait to gift to others.

FROM ARCHIE TO ZACK, by Vincent Kirsch, Harry N. Abrams, Dec. 29, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

“Archie loves Zack!”
“Zack loves Archie!”
Everyone said it was so.

But Archie hasn’t told Zack yet. And Zack hasn’t told Archie. They spend just about every minute together: walking to and from school, doing science and art projects, practicing for marching band, learning to ride bikes, and so much more.

Over the course of a few months, Archie tries to write a letter to Zack to tell him how he feels: “From A to Z.” None of his drafts sound quite right, so he hides them all away. One by one, Archie’s friends (Zelda, Zinnia, and Zuzella) find the letters . . . but they know exactly whom they’re meant for.

Whimsical illustrations bring this tale of true friendship — and maybe something a bit more — to life. If you’re looking for a Valentine’s book full of inclusivity, this is the one for you.

MY CREEPY VALENTINE, by Arthur Howard, Beach Lane Books, Oct. 6, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Mitzi the witch and her kitten Hoodwink love all of the holidays except one: Valentine’s Day. It’s lovely-dovey, and witches only like things that are creepy-crawly. Then Mitzi meets Spencer. Spencer can wiggle his ears! He plays on the monkey bars upside down! And when he shoots milk out of his nose, Mitzi can’t look away. For the first time, she wants to make a valentine for a special someone. But what message will spell success and get her a valentine in return?

This fun twist on Valentine’s Day is not so much lovey-dovey as it is thoughtful. Arthur Howard crams a lot of nuance into this short picture book. It has humor and heart.

PORCUPINE CUPID, by Jason June and Lori Richmond, Margaret K. McElderry Books, Dec. 1, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day—or it will be if Porcupine has any say. He uses his quills like Cupid’s arrows, hoping to bring the sweet and sentimental spirit of the holiday to all his forest friends. But with every poke! that Porcupine gives, he gets a hey!, ouch!, or yowser! in return.

It seems Porcupine’s mission isn’t turning out quite like he planned, but with some quick thinking he might just be able to save the day…and maybe find a valentine of his very own.

This tongue-in-cheek picture books is sure to bring smiles to kids and adults alike. A fun twist at the end left my 6-year-old giggling.

I’ve never been a fan of Valentine’s Day. I just don’t think you need a holiday to let the one you love know that you love them. That said, it took on new meaning six years ago when I went into labor with our daughter. Since then, I’ve looked at the day as a reminder of different kinds of love — that between a two people; as a parent; and as a child.

With that in mind, below are some picture books that help celebrate love no matter what time of year.

Happy HeartHAPPY HEART, by Hannah Eliot and Susie Hammer, Little Simon, Dec. 3, 2019, Board Book, $7.99 (ages 0-5)

You are the sun in my sky.
You are the apple of my eye.
You mean the world to me.
You make my heart so happy.

Happy Heart is a simple, yet lovely book of love. Each page is die-cut into a different shape — sun, tree, heart, earth, flower. Each page has texture to it, perfect for exploring little hands. It’s sparkly design immediately caught my almost-6-year-old’s attention. She read it on her own and loved it.

I heart youI HEART YOU, by Meg Fleming and Sarah Jane Wright, Little Simon, Dec. 3, 2019, Board Book, $7.99 (ages 0-5)

Little ones adore being independent and trying new things. But they also need Mom and Dad’s reassurance and snuggles.

I Heart You features spare, heat-felt text, but it’s Sarah Jane Wright’s lovely illustrations that really carry this book. It’s a lovely book to snuggle a little one with.

Angelina LovesANGELINA LOVES, by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig , Simon Spotlight, Dec. 10, 2019, Board Book, $6.99 (ages 2-6)

Angelina Ballerina loves lots of things! There’s her family and dancing of course—with her ballet class at Miss Lilly’s ballet school. And cartwheeling around the playground with her BFF, Alice.

This is the perfect book for Angelina Ballerina fans, but also for those who are new to the series. It’s a charming book that’s fun to explore as a family and alone.

YOU LOVES EWE! (A YAM AND DONKEY BOOK), by Cece Bell , Clarion Books, Nov. 26, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-7)

A persnickety spud, Yam, introduces the grammar-challenged Donkey to a new friend, Ewe, a lady sheep. The confusion between “ewe” and “you” results in a series of who’s-on-first misunderstandings, even though Yam explains the concept of homonyms to Donkey clearly enough for the youngest of readers to understand.

You Love Ewe! is a companion to I Yam a Donkey by Cece Bell. This almost comic-styled book features bold illustrations and hilarious text that is sure to make your young reader laugh out loud.

WITH ALL MY HEART, by Stephanie Stansbie and Richard Smythe, Silver Dolphin Books, Dec. 3, 2019, Hardcover, $15.99 (ages 3-5)

With All My Heart celebrates the love between a parent and child. Each little section features text paired with shaped die cuts that emphasize key words throughout. This book reminds me of one my favorite picture books, Your Hand In My Hand, by Mark Sperring and Britta Teckentrup It evokes the same loving tenderness and features similar charming illustrations.

Am I the only one who isn’t in love with Valentine’s Day? I’ve never really cared for the day, even when I was a child. There’s something about someone telling me to celebrate love on a specific day. I’d rather celebrate the ones I love year round.

That said there are a number of charming books out just in time for the “day of love.” The following are ordered by age.

THAT’S ME LOVING YOU, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Teagan White, Random House Books for Young Readers, Dec. 18, 2018, Boardbook, $8.99 (age 0-3)

That’s Me Loving You celebrates a parent’s love for a child in all things big and small — a soft breeze, the bright sun or the feeling in your heart. Amy’s text is warm and inviting and will resonate with readers of all ages. Teagan White’s charming illustrations perfectly pair with Amy’s text.

Now in boardbook form, That’s Me Loving You is great for all stages of life. I read it at my mom’s funeral and frequently share it with my daughter.

THE AMAZING IDEA OF YOU, by Charlotte Sullivan Wild and Mary Lundquist, Bloomsbury Children’s Books, Feb. 5, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-6)

Hidden inside of everything is an idea — a tree within an apple; a bird inside of an egg; and endless possibilities within a child.

The Amazing Idea of You celebrates potential through lyrical prose and charming illustrations that add just a touch of whimsy throughout.

MY HEART, by Corinna Luyken, Dial Books, Jan. 8, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

My heart is a window. My heart is a slide. My heart can be closed…or opened up wide.

Some days your heart is a puddle or a fence to keep the world out. But some days it is wide open to the love that surrounds you.

My Heart reminds me of Jo Witek’s In My Heart in terms of subject matter and tone. My Heart helps young readers to understand that the ebb and flow of emotion is not only frequent by natural. Corinna Luyken’s sparse text compliments her lovely illustrations, which evoke emotion on their own.

TRUE COLORS, by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, Penguin Workshop, Dec. 24, 2018, Hardcover, $9.99 (ages 4 and up)

In 1986, the song True Colors was released. Since then, it’s been a mainstay, appealing to all ages and demographics.

Now, for the first time, the song is presented in book form. The book is bold and beautiful featuring vibrant stylized illustrations that pair perfectly with the lyrics. This is a book that will likely appeal to readers of all ages.

I (HEART) ART: THE WORK WE LOVE FROM THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harry N. Abrams, Jan. 15, 2019, Hardcover, $15.99 (ages 6 and up)

I (Heart) Art brings more than 150 works of art from the Met into your living room. The book is divided into 11 themes, including art, music, animals and family. An introduction explains “art” refers to a wide range of media and subjects. Beyond that, each piece of art is presented with the same information — title, date, artist, medium, and how it was acquired.

The chunky, smaller size of I (Heart) Art) allows for easy perusal for all ages. Among the artists included are Jennifer Bartlett, Romare Bearden, Rosa Bonheur, Canaletto, Mary Cassatt, Marc Chagall, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Hokusai, Winslow Homer, Edmonia Lewis, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz, and Andy Warhol.

It’s February, which means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For me, nothing says, “I love you” like a good book. Below are some great options that will appeal to readers of all ages. The following books are ordered by suggested age range.

WHO LOVES ME? by David McPhail, Harry N. Abrams; Brdbk edition, Dec. 5, 2017, Boardbook $8.95 (ages 2 and up)

Walter and Mama are gathering blueberries for a pie, and Walter is very excited. He loves pie, but he wonders, “Who loves me?” Mama tells Walter how much Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa love him. She tells him about how much his aunts and friends and pets love him, too. By the time the pie is ready, Walter has a long list of loved ones, but someone’s missing. Who? Mama! My daughter loves these charming little raccoons, and has fun playing along with the guessing game. Who Loves Me? Is a simple book, but one little readers will enjoy reading over and over again.

100 THINGS I LOVE TO DO WITH YOU, by Amy Schwartz, Harry N. Abrams, Dec. 5, 2017, Hardcover, $16.95 (ages 3-5)

From making faces and running races to snapping beans and wearing jeans, this is a collection of things to do with the one you love. 100 Things I Love to Do With You reminds me of my childhood. The illustrations are reminiscent of a 1970s book long out of print that belonged to my older sister. I don’t even remember the title, but I do remember the feeling it evoked. I get the same felling when reading Amy Schwartz’s book. This universal look at how even the simplest of things evoke a feeling of familiarity and love.

Lovey Bunny, by Kristine A. Lombardi, Abrams Books for Young Readers, March 3, 2015, Boardbook, $7.95 (ages 3-7)

Lovey Bunny loves just about everything — her family, art, watching her mama make things, and especially playing dress-up. But when she takes Mama’s new dress for a spin without asking Lovey Bunny ruins it. Lovey Bunny must think fast to make things right with Mama. This is a cute boardbook that celebrates love, creativity and offers a gentle reminder about asking permission. This most likely will appeal to girls and fashion-minded boys. The suggested age range is 3-7, but I would start younger. My almost-4-year-old has almost outgrown it, and I can’t imagine a 6- or 7-year-old being interested unless they were reading it to a younger sibling/cousin/friend.

THE LITTLEST VALENTINE, by Brandi Dougherty and Michelle Todd, Cartwheel Books, Nov. 28, 2017, Softcover, $3.99 (ages 3-5)

Emma may be the littlest in the Valentine family, but she knows that she has what it takes to help the family business get ready for the holiday. The problem is Emma is just a little bit too little to do just about anything. But, as Daniel Tiger likes to say, “everyone is big enough to do something.” When Emma discovers a dirty little puppy on the street, she realizes she’s uniquely suited for helping him. This sweet little story has everything a preschooler/kindergartner could want — valentines, cookies, puppies and lots of love. This is already a favorite in our house.

THE WORD COLLECTOR, by Peter H. Reynolds, Orchard Books, Jan. 30, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Some people collect stamps, other collect coins, or comic books, or rocks, or baseball cards. Jerome is different. He collects words. Words he hears, sees and sees. Some words are short and sweet words. Others are two-syllable treats. And multisyllable words that sound like little songs. Jerome doesn’t understand all the words at first, but he loves to say them. Then one day, Jerome discovers that connecting those words together might just be the most powerful thing of all. We’re big fans of Peter H. Reynolds’ Happy Dreamer so I was very excited to receive The Word Collector, and I think I love this one even more. Words and illustrations are paired in perfect harmony. This is a great book to share with word lovers of every age.

I LOVE YOU: A POP-UP BOOK, by David A. Carter, Abrams Books for Young Readers, Dec. 5, 2017, Hardcover, $14.95 (ages 5 and up)

David A. Carter’s I Love You: A Pop-Up Book is a book-art hybrid that’s a feast for the eyes. I Love You: A Pop-Up Book features seven spreads, each with a verse (“You are a burst of joy and … I love you.”) and a pop-up of different geometrical and abstract forms. Scattered hearts are the unifying element that may not seem obvious at first but offer a fun sort of scavenger hunt throughout. This is a cool book that may not stand up to the littlest hands but will be enjoyed by loved ones young and old.

HOW TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN 5 LANGUAGES, by Kenard Pak, Wide Eyed Editions; Ill edition, Feb. 14, 2018, Boardbook, $12.99 (ages 5-6)

Learn to say, “I love you” in French, Japanese, Mandarin, English and Spanish with this press and listen board book. Each spread features a child who loves something different George in England loves his dog and Jia in China loves her brother. Buttons on the side of the book allow children to listen to the phrase in each language. This interactive book is a lovely introduction to different languages. The idea that love is the same all over the world is a nice touch. “I love you” is written out on each page, which is helpful because some of the recordings are a little difficult to understand. I also appreciate the “on/off” button on the back that saves battery life. Strangely, this book doesn’t come out until Valentine’s Day itself so plan ahead if this is one you want to give.
