Wednesday feels these girls have some kind of shared history, but it isn’t until Miki gives her an official invitation to the Dead Club that she starts to understand there’s a lot more going on with the ghosts in Alton and the girls who can see them.

With a name like The Secret Dead Club, you know kids are going to be drawn to Karen Strong’s new book about friendship, fitting in, and the mysterious forces that control the afterlife.

Strong balances the mysterious with mundane daily life and does that against the backdrop of kids figuring themselves out. In fact, Strong’s writing style reminds me of one of my childhood favorites — Mary Downing Hahn. Wait Till Helen Comes, anyone?

Where Strong excels is balancing the creepy with lighter notes, creating a spooky atmosphere without making things too scary for readers. This balance comes from various sources — extended family, new friends, spirits with unfinished business.

Strong’s writing is clear and inviting. She sets the stakes early on, and makes readers want to keep reading.

As we enter the Halloween season, The Secret Dead Club is the perfect novel to set the tone.

Godfather Death is exquisite from cover to cover. Author Sally Nicholls’ haunting tale will captivate readers young and old. It’s the type of story that begs to be read aloud. Júlia Sardà’s stylized artwork features a dark humor that will resonate with readers. Text and illustrations pair perfectly, moving the story forward and rewarding you at the end.

Godfather Death is a good option heading into the “scary season,” but it holds year-round appeal. This would be a fun classroom read with lots of writing and art applications.

I recently passed this book on to a friend whose son needed to read a “fairy tale” book and do a report on it. He’s not a confident reader, but The Skull had immediate appeal. Klassen’s monochromatic artwork is an immediate draw. There’s a subtlety to Klassen’s humor that really resonates with kids.

CRIMSON TWILL: WITCH IN THE COUNTRY, by Kallie George and Birgitta Sif, Candlewick, July 11, 2023, Hardcover, $15.99 (ages 7-10)

Crimson Twill’s new friends from New Wart City, Mauve and Wesley, are coming for a visit! But as soon as they arrive at Crimson’s house in Cackle County, things start to go wrong. At the rotten apple orchard, Crimson’s ripening spell goes horribly awry (what will they do with all that rotten applesauce?).

Then, at the broom-straw field, Wesley cuts too much straw and starts to float away. And when the friends try to collect frogs’ breath for their spells (it makes everything wonderfully green and warty), Mauve gets a stinky faceful of it!

What on earth is going on? The whole countryside feels like something big is about to happen, and Crimson wonders if it has something to do with Granny Twill and that giant cauldron of stew she made. This is a fun book to read aloud, and kids will be drawn to the bold illustrations that have been created through a combination of virtual reality and photo editing.

VLAD, THE FABULOUS VAMPIRE (The World of Gustavo), by Flavia Z. Drago, Candlewick, Sept. 12, 2023, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)

A little lone werewolf prowls the nights on his own until he finds friendship in the most unexpected of places.

Every Night at Midnight is a sweet story of loneliness and friendship found in the most unlikely of places. Peter Cheong’s story is gentle, even while depicting a wolf scampering, dashing and jumping through the night. His characters are approachable and the tone is pitch perfect.

THE BADDIES, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Scholastic Press, Aug. 1, 2023, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Oh no! The Baddies are coming! They’re the meanest and nastiest ghost, witch, and troll in all the land, and they just love being bad. When a little girl moves into a nearby cottage, the Baddies can’t wait to scare her out of her wits. But little girls are much braver than they thought, and baddies don’t always win…

You can’t really go wrong with a book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The duo behind Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, and The Gruffalo are back with yet another tale of not-so-fearsome creatures up to no good. As is always the case, The Baddies has a lovely rhythm that makes it fun to read aloud. And the illustrations are bright and silly and exactly what kids love.

Maximus lives just outside town, and when the chance to go to his home arises, Halle grabs it with both hands. She doesn’t realize that real life horrors await her at Price Manor.

Paisley and Argyle, Maximus’s twin children, think that the creepy, squid-like creatures that have attached themselves to the faces of the manor’s staff, putting them in a zombie-like stupor, are just another one of their prankster dad’s tricks. When Halle arrives and is attacked by one of the creatures, she meets the twins and assures them that this is no joke. Author Laura Parnum knows how to do middle-grade horror well. Peril at Price Manor has a silly-scary vibe that works well with kids who don’t really want to be scared with violence and gore but enjoy a Goosebumps-like tale.

Parnum’s writing is bright and conversational, making it a comfortable read for both her intended audience and grownups who we’ll enjoy reading it aloud as well.

The story is told from all three kids’ viewpoints, adding depth and color throughout. And it is great fun to have the kids solve the problem rather than rely on adults. There’s a lot of growth here as they learn their own strengths.

Peril at Price Manor is a quirky read that should appeal to a large cross-section of readers.

Sixteens pairs of opposite words are presented with wit, whimsy, and webs. Familiar opposites like day and night are presented alongside more unexpected pairs like visible and invisible, proving that there’s no web these silly spiders can’t spin!

Though not specifically a Halloween book, Web Opposites is a great holiday option that you won’t mind having around year-round. There’s nothing scary about these stylized arachnids. They’re as charming as could be. And the book introduces some opposite words I’ve not seen in similar board books (expected and unexpected; attached and detached; simple and complex; clockwise and counterclockwise).

AGES 3 AND UP

TEN SPOOKY PUMPKINS, by Gris Grimly, Orchard Books; Illustrated edition, Sept. 21, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-6)

 10 little pumpkins, sitting in a line, looking for a cat and they found nine. The wind said SWOOSH and the gate went CREAK. The owl cried WHOOOO, we all screamed EEK. Join goblins, ghosts, witches, and more in this rhythmic countdown, traveling through the countryside and discovering more Halloween creatures along the way. Finally, the story culminates with them all joining together in a joyful celebration under the full harvest moon, dancing until it’s time for bed.

Many parents of preschool kids know this Halloween rhyme. It’s lots of fun for parents and kiddos to say out loud. What makes this version stand out is Gris Grimly’s gothic-style illustrations, which are just a touch spooky while still feeling friendly.

AGES 4 AND UP

TWITCHY WITCHY ITCH, by Priscilla Tey, Candlewick, June 24, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Tick, tock! Three cups.
Tick, tock! Three saucers.
With nine minutes left, everything was ready.
Or was it?

Itch the witch is having company over for tea. As the clock counts down to tea o’clock, Itch’s mind is in a tizzy: is her house too twitchy? Is her home too itchy? Zipping and zooming, dusting and brooming, Itch sweeps and bewitches the mess away (just in the nick of time). But as soon as her two guests walk in, Itch’s housekeeping comes unraveled. How will Itch tame such an itchy, glitchy, fidgety mess?

The Twitchy Witchy Itch is another non-Halloween specific read easily enjoyed year-round. Kids will get a kick out of Priscilla Tey’s computer-glitch-esque illustrations that almost feel as if you’ve got a twitch. And the overall message of staying true to yourself is gentle and seamlessly tied in.

POULTRYGEIST, by Eric Geron and Pete Oswald, Candlewick, Aug. 10, 2021, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 4-8)

It’s punny. It’s spooky. It’s a meta picture book that puts a fresh spin on an old joke and elevates chicken comedy to ghastly new levels. A little spring chicken crosses the road but quickly gets flattened under a semitruck. The barnyard beasts who’ve gone before break the news: now that Chicken’s fried — dispatched to the Other Side — Chicken has a job, an unwanted job, as a noisy troublemaking ghost. This fowl may be weak in the beak, but Chicken knows that scaring people isn’t nice. There is such a thing as a friendly ghost, after all — isn’t there?

If you can only buy one book this season and you’ve got kids of varying ages, Poultrygeist is the book you should buy. This laugh-out-loud book is bold and colorful. It’s simple enough for little ones to join in with some of the reading and older readers to put on a show. This one’s fun for the entire family.

AGES 5 AND UP

THE GHOULS’ GUIDE TO GOOD GRAMMAR, by Leslie Kimmelman and Mary Sullivan, Sleeping Bear Press, Aug. 15, 2021, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 5-8)

Grammar can be confusing, no matter if you’re an adult, a child, or well . . . even a ghoul. And its rules can be hard to remember or keep straight. Ghastly things can happen when a comma or even a simple period is misplaced. But never fear! We have the perfect book to help you keep your head and your cool. In The Ghouls’ Guide to Good Grammar basic rules of grammar such as correct punctuation and appropriate word choices are explained from a monster’s point of view. For example, see how a simple comma clears up any misunderstanding between Vanessa and her parents. “Vanessa Vampire loves cooking, her parents, and her baby sister” versus “Vanessa Vampire loves cooking her parents and baby sister.” For anyone needing a refresher course on how to use a hyphen or an apostrophe, or is confused by pesky contractions, The Ghouls’ Guide to Good Grammar is for you. After all, choosing the right word and the right punctuation to use is as important as picking the right human being to eat for dinner. Back matter includes a short grammar quiz.

This fun look at the rules behind the English language will have kids laughing all while reinforcing the rules they’re learning in school. It’s a great way to learn without knowing you’re learning.

All of the monsters are getting ready for the big Halloween bash in this rhyming board book. Lift the flaps to reveal Dracula brushing his fangs, witches combing their hair, and more silly surprises! While Halloween can be fun for many, it can also be really scary for little ones. Monsters Come Out Tonight! is a cute board book that makes sometimes creepy characters accessible. It’s a good introduction to the holiday.

PICK A PUMPKIN, by Patricia Toht and Jarvis, Candlewick, July 9, 2019, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 3-7)

Readers will follow along with each step, from picking out the perfect specimen at the pumpkin patch (be sure to stop for cider and toffee apples) to carting it home, scooping out the insides, carving a scary face, and finally lighting a candle inside — savoring the familiar ritual of transforming an ordinary pumpkin into a one-of-a-kind glowing jack-o’-lantern. —synopsis provided by Candlewick

Pick a Pumpkin is a sweet story that will help build excitement for and prompt memories of a picking out just the right pumpkin. This is a great not-so-spooky Halloween book.

All ghosts wear white sheets. That’s just what ghosts do. White sheets are good for haunting people, and they make the ghosts feel like part of one big family. The Right One for Roderic sweet and simple yet completely heartfelt.

HIDE AND SEEK, by Katie May Green , Candlewick, July 16, 2019, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 5-8)

A midsummer moon shines on Shiverhawk Hall, where portraits of children come alive on the wall. As night falls, the playful painted residents wake up for another Gorey-esque rhyming caper. When the DeVillechild twins are nowhere to be seen, the other children escape their frames in search of two girls in white dresses — and, possibly, a midnight game in the garden. Out in the night air, through the maze, and into the woods they go, looking for their mysterious friends. Will they be able to find the twins before the sun rises? —synopsis provided by Candlewick

While the suggested age for this eerie, but not scary, tale is ages 5-8, I think it skews a little younger. I’d suggest 4-6 or 7 if the child is reading to younger siblings.

GHOULIA AND THE MYSTERIOUS VISITOR, by Barbara Cantini , Harry N. Abrams, Aug. 13, 2019, Hardcover, $9.99 (ages 6-8)

One dark and stormy night, Ghoulia’s cousin Dilbert comes to visit her at Crumbling Manor. She’s confused — she didn’t invite him, and it turns out that Dilbert’s a real grouch. He complains about everything! When Ghoulia tries to track down Auntie Departed to find out why she invited Dilbert, she finds that Auntie has vanished. Ghoulia can’t find her. And the doorbell won’t stop ringing. One after another, Ghoulia’s friends arrive—all with the same mysterious invitation in hand. As the gang searches Crumbling Manor for Auntie Departed, one of their own goes missing. This is the second book in the charming Ghoulia series, which follows a zombie girl who lives in a haunted manor. These early readers feature full-color illustrations and kid-friendly activities. While the 60ish-page books don’t feature chapters per say, there are natural resting points built in throughout.

Once upon a time some hungry strangers convinced some townsfolk to each share a small amount of their food to make a meal for everyone to enjoy. This story, of course, is that of Stone Soup, which teaches the value of sharing.

Bone Soup, by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Tom Knight, takes that familiar folk tale and gives it a spooky, Halloween twist.

In Bone Soup, three hungry little witches are looking for a tasty treat but their cupboards are bare save one lowly bone. “Only a bone, you say? PIFF-POOF! … Bone soup is the perfect Halloween treat.” But before the witches can settle in for a delicious meal, they need some more ingredients. With the help of a bunch of spooky characters, including a sweet little monster, they make the perfect soup.

Bone Soup is a cute Halloween tale that’s not too spooky even though it features monsters, ghouls, a ghost, mummy and skeleton. My 4-year-old loved the charming illustrations and found the story engaging. I do kind of wish we had read Stone Soup prior to Bone Soup. It would have given her a little more frame of reference. But when I told her we could make our own “Bone Soup” from the included recipe, she was very excited.

Capucilli’s text is great fun for reading aloud — “TAP! TAP! TAP!, WHIRL-WHIRL, WHOO-OO-OO-SH,” but some of the color choices for font are unfortunately hard to read in lower-light situations. You’ll need to turn a light for this one. Otherwise, it’s a delightful read.
