Waiting for Christmas is a companion to All My Secrets, also by Lynn Austin, which was published in February 2024. While Waiting for Christmas does stand alone, I did become curious about certain references, and I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more if I had read All My Secrets first.

Waiting for Christamas is a cozy Christmas tale that leans heavily into the characters’ faith. Tyndale is a Christian publisher, so that should come as no surprise here. It’s not over the top, nor is it overly preachy. And it does feel as though it’s steeped deeply in who the characters are.

Austin’s writing is warm and inviting, and her setting is clear and accessible. You can easily picture the action playing out like a Hallmark movie. In that sense, it’s clear that there aren’t going to be any big surprise endings — it’s fairly predictable — but enjoyable nonetheless.

Waiting for Christmas is considered adult fiction, but I would have no problem handing it to a young adult or new adult. It’s a fun option as we head into the Christmas shopping season.

We had something similar when my daughter was little, and we would spend a good 15 minutes at a time reading and re-reading, because this sort of book is magic. The Christmas Songbook is one of those books that becomes an instant favorite with kids. We have some similar ones that are read and played on repeat through the holidays. The recording quality here is decent across all eight songs, and the sweet illustrations easily draw readers in. The inclusion of sheet music is a nice touch.

This charming puzzle is sure to make for a fun family night. At 500 pieces, it’s not overly complicated. Although, those pieces are realistically too small for kids under the age of 5. The finished product is 19.5 X 14 inches, which isn’t very big. The puzzle is made out of sturdy cardboard, and the pieces were punched out well, making it easy to fit the pieces together.

This new-to-me calendar has been available since 2008, and there’s good reason for its longevity. The 24 little books are sweetly illustrated and are adaptable to different ages. The gold loops make it easy to remove the book/ornaments, which are well-constructed. This is a good option for families looking for more nonsecular celebrations.

The Fir Tree dreams of adventure and wishes to be something more. He imagines a new life as a ship’s mast, traveling the world by sea. When men come to the meadow with axes one day and cut him down, the Fir Tree is eager to be chosen for a new purpose. But the Robin worries. What will become of her strong, beautiful friend?

 This retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Fir Tree is one of my favorite holiday offerings this year. I could spend an hour just gazing at the exquisite illustrations. Each one has beautifully stylized details that truly make them special. And there’s a lovely touch of hope that runs throughout.

12 DAYS OF PRINCESS, by Holly Rice and John Bajet, Disney Press, Sept. 7, 2021, Hardcover, $12.99 (ages 3-5)

Inspired by the famous song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” a new holiday tradition is here: the twelve days of princess! Countdown to Christmas with Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Cinderella, Belle, Aurora, Snow White, and Ariel. Each day brings a new magical gift, like two glass slippers or seven singing dwarfs, from one of your favorite Disney Princesses to help get you into the holiday spirit.

Though a bit silly, I can definitely see young readers singing along with princess-centric book. If your child loves Disney Princesses, then this will be right up their alley.

The First Christmas is a great choice for families that want to focus on the religious side of Christmas. Moses’s illustrations pair perfectly with the carol, giving readers a sense of the place where Jesus was born.

RED AND GREEN AND BLUE AND WHITE, by Lee Wind and Paul O. Zelinsky, Levine Querido, Oct. 19, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-7)

Inspired by a true story, this is a tale of a community that banded together to spread light. It’s a holiday season that both Isaac, whose family is Jewish, and Teresa, whose family is Christian, have looked forward to for months! They’ve been counting the days, playing in the snow, making cookies, drawing (Teresa) and writing poems (Isaac). They enjoy all the things they share, as well as the things that make them different. But when Isaac’s window is smashed in the middle of the night, it seems like maybe not everyone appreciates “difference.”

Too often, we see separate religions as the things that divide us. Red and Green and Blue and White shows how they can unite us. This heartfelt story celebrates the true spirit that can permeate the holiday season — if we let it.

ROBIN ROBIN, by Dan Ojari, Mikey Please, et al., Red Comet Press, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

A chirpy young robin is adopted by a family of mice in the joyful retelling of the new animation holiday musical special from Netflix and Aardman Animation.

When her egg fortuitously rolls into a garbage dump, Robin is raised by a loving family of mice. As she grows up, her differences become more apparent. Robin sets off on the heist to end all heists to prove to her family that she can be a really good mouse – but ends up discovering who she really is.

Robin Robin may also be a Netflix special, but the book stands on its own. This charming tale about a somewhat clumsy robin and her adventures in the who-man’s house is one that will have readers giggling aloud. Kids will be drawn to the sweet illustrations and parents will enjoy reading it aloud.

Though set at Christmas, the holiday is never specifically mentioned. Rather it’s the themes of diversity, community, inclusion and acceptance throughout that celebrate the spirit of the holiday.

A CHRISTMAS TOO BIG, by Colleen Madden, Two Lions; Bilingual edition, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Kerry’s family goes completely berserk with Christmas every year. Starting the day after Thanksgiving, her home becomes a whirlwind of lights, music, and elves, elves, elves! Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming.

This year, Kerry is desperate for some peace and quiet. Heading outdoors, she realizes a lot of her neighbors are having a Christmas too big. But not Mrs. Flores. She’s having a much quieter Christmas, complete with decorations and music from the country where she used to live. It sparks an idea: maybe there’s a way for Kerry to create her own Christmas traditions. But will anyone in her crazy Christmas house understand? 

A Christmas Too Big feels a bit overwhelming at first. As author/illustrator Colleen Madden follows the family merrymaking, you, as the reader, get a very true sense of how Kerry feels. Then, everything changes. With one turn of the page, you enter a quiet, calm place. You can take a breath.

With one simple transition, Madden conveys a host of emotions. It’s a fantastic juxtaposition. As Kerry returns home, she realizes that by creating her own tradition, she can take back some of Christmas for herself.

CARLA AND THE CHRISTMAS CORNBREAD, by Carla Hall and Cherise Harris, Denene Millner Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Christmas is Carla’s favorite holiday of the year. She goes to her grandparents’ house and eats grandma’s special recipe — a perfectly delicious cornbread. She listens to her grandpa Doc’s marvelous stories about traveling the world. And, best of all, she spends lots of time with her family.

But when Carla accidentally takes a bite out of Santa’s sugar cookie, she thinks she’s ruined Christmas. How will Santa know to stop at their house if they don’t leave him a midnight snack? With her grandmother’s help, Carla comes up with a plan, but will it be enough to save Christmas?

In a season where there are a lot of Christmas on-offs, Carla and the Christmas Cornbread feels like a complete story. Characters are developed, and the story — written by a trained chef — has a point to it. It’s lovely to read about one family’s Christmas traditions and the inclusion of the cornbread recipe at the end is a nice touch.

We celebrate Christmas in our home, but focus on other faith traditions as well. When my daughter was 3, she insisted we light a menorah. This book offers a nice bridge between the two faiths. Beautiful gold accents throughout the illustrations take this one over the top.

The second my 6-year-old saw this, she wanted to start creating. This is a dream for creative kids. While her work isn’t exactly perfect, she’s had a blast with this set, and that’s all I care about. The publisher’s suggested age is 8-12. I think going younger is fine as long as you’re prepared to help when needed.

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know my family and I have been working on a special project — a book-themed Christmas tree.

My family and I decorated this tree in honor of my brother (who passed away in 2015) and my mom (who died in 2018). Both were avid readers.

Our tree is decorated with ornaments and a star topper made from the pages of books. Mini books also correspond to $1000 worth of books under the tree. We covered all the bases with the books. They’re all family favorites and cater to all ages.The books range from The Hungry Caterpillar and The Questioneers to The Giver and Encyclopedia Brown to The Princess Academy and Fablehaven to The Chronicles of Prydain and LOTR to Mary Poppins and The Wheel of Time.

We hope the tree will not only bring joy to fellow book lovers but will make a real difference in the life of a child. Why? This tree will be auctioned off at the Festival of Trees. Proceeds benefit children at Primary Children’s Hospital, which is located in Salt Lake City.

My brother was sick most of his life and spent a lot of time at Primary Children’s Hospital. When he was there, books were his escape.

?Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees features uniquely decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, playhouses, centerpieces, quilts and gingerbread houses. Shops are filled with dolls, handmade crafts and quilts, freshly baked cookies and candies, an endless assortment of freshly-made fudge, hot scones, and cinnamon rolls.

Trees are sold through an auction on Opening Night, which is an event that is held the evening before Festival of Trees opens to the public. This year, the festival is open to the general public Wednesday, Dec. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, from 10am – 9pm. You can buy tickets here.

Funds raised at Festival of Trees are a “A Gift of Love” to children at Primary Children’s Hospital. More than $2.8 million was raised by Festival of Trees in 2018.

The suggested age range for I Spy Christmas is 3-5, but the whole family will enjoy this book. Some of the items are a challenge to find, and we’ve turned it into a sort of contest to see who can find the most items in a certain amount of time or who can find something first. The rhymes add to the festive ambiance. I can see this book being a family favorite for years to come.

In this holiday story, meet a tiny mouse with no name who is blessed with a large imagination and a generous spirit. He lives a very lonely life in a very big house. Yet he dearly loves Christmas and one Christmas Eve he surprises Santa Claus with a most unusual present.

How does this small mouse with a big heart become Santa’s special helper? This sweet little tale oozes with charm. It embodies that warm old-fashioned feeling the holidays bring.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and this richly illustrated treasury celebrates everything there is to love about the holiday season! It’s filled with favorite Christmas stories, such as “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and “Little Women, A Merry Christmas,” and songs as well as original poems from Lee Bennett Hopkins, Naomi Shihab Nye, and others; original recipes from Erin Gleeson, Yvette van Boven, and Yotam Ottolenghi; and other holiday trappings. All the artwork is from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection, ranging from religious paintings depicting the Nativity, to 20th-century illustrations showing Santa Claus, to wintry scenes of snowy landscapes and ice skaters.

Growing up, we had a book similar to this one. I don’t know what happened to it, but I remember reading it every year. I’m excited to add this one to out holiday collection.

It’s Christmastime, and Pip and Posy are busy decorating the tree with gingerbread and a beautiful sugar star. Is it possible Pip might know what’s happened to all of the ornaments?

While adults will understand what’s going on with Pip and Posy’s Christmas tree, younger readers won’t immediately. It’s a mystery they get to solve, and it has a hidden health message in there for good measure.

LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE, by Jessica Courtney-Tickle, Big Picture Press, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook, $15.99 (ages 2-5)

One white and snowy night, a little Christmas tree stands alone in the forest. Everything is white and lifeless. As the night goes on, there are signs of life: an orange fox, a red-breasted robin, a cloud of fireflies. By the end of the book, the little Christmas tree is transformed by nature.

This is one of the prettier lift-the-flap books to cross my doorstep. I love that this is a Christmas book that celebrates nature rather than presents. It would make a lovely addition to any Christmas collection.

ALL ABOARD! THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN, by Nichole Mara and Andrew Kolb, Harry N. Abrams, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook $9.99 (ages 2-5)

Folding out car by car, this accordion-style book takes readers on a tour of Santa’s Christmas train. Each car has lots to see—elves making toys, penguins playing, reindeer preparing for the big day—as Santa searches for his missing boot. With a running landscape dotted with objects for children to find and count on the back of the book, All Aboard! The Christmas Train is an interactive ride from beginning to end.

This follow-up to Let’s Ride a Train is just as enjoyable as its predecessor. You’ll need room to spread out with this one, but you’ll be glad for it once you climb aboard the Christmas train.

DECKED OUT FOR CHRISTMAS! by Ethan Long, Harry N. Abrams, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook $9.99 (ages 2-4)

The mice at the North Pole are getting ready to deck the halls with all the essentials. They’ve got ornaments and twinkle lights, candy canes and popcorn garlands. One by one, the mice unpack all the merriest decorations, but soon the items become a bit unexpected. Hot cocoa? Fuzzy dice? A map? In a festive twist, it’s revealed that it’s not a tree the mice are decorating, but Santa’s sleigh, all decked out for Christmas Eve!

This sweet, but simple, book will appeal to the youngest of readers. It’s sparse text and bright illustrations are sure to bring giggles and smiles.

While this is not specifically a Christmas book, it’s prefect for reading during the holiday season. My Little Gifts is the latest in the Growing Hearts series from Jo Witek and Christine Roussey. I recommend any and all of the books from the series. The writing is heartfelt and the illustrations charming.

COMING HOME, by Kerry Hyndman and Michael Morpurgo, Candlewick, Oct. 23, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)

A plucky robin, lost and alone, sets out on an epic journey, guided only by a call in his heart saying “come home!” He wills his wings to beat faster, lifting him over great mountains and dark forests, through blinding blizzards and rolling fog, across the wide, wild sea. Can he find his way back to his family in time for Christmas?

The text of Coming Home is more sophisticated than most picture books for young children. The poetic narrative may be difficult for those with short attention spans, but offers enough context that most will understand it. Beautiful illustrations bring prose to life in this gorgeous book.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS: THE DANCE OF THE REALMS, by Calliope Glass and Marco Bucci, Disney Press, Sept. 18, 2018, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 3-5)

With a foreword written by celebrated dancer Misty Copeland, this picture book brings The Nutcracker and the Four Realms to life in a brand-new way.

This version of The Nutcracker is not the one you grew up with. Elements are the same, but it’s almost an entirely different story. This book, as with two more listed below, have been released in conjunction with the Disney film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. I have not seen the film so I can’t compare the book to it. The illustrations here have an impressionist feel to them that add to the dreamlike quality of Clara’s dream. It will never hold up to the source material, but if you can put it aside, this book is nice.

MRS. CLAUS TAKES THE REINS, by Sue Fliess and Mark Chambers, Two Lions, Sept. 18, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-7)

It’s Christmas Eve morning, and Santa Claus is still in bed! He’s feeling stuffy and sneezy and slow as a yeti. Will Christmas have to be canceled? Not this year! Because Mrs. Claus is ready to take the reins in Santa’s place. With a plan in mind, Mrs. Claus assembles the crew, maps out the route, and preps the sleigh. Then, with a snap of the reins, she shoots off into the night. Delivering gifts all over the world without Santa’s magic won’t be easy, but Mrs. Claus proves she has some holiday sparkle of her own…

Mrs. Claus Takes the Reins is a delightful romp around the globe. Sue Fliess’ rhythmic text rolls off the tongue, and her imagination makes you grin. Mark Chambers’ illustrations are bright and cheerful and bring giggles throughout. Not only do I love how this book brings Mrs. Claus to the foreground, but also that it shows a married couple sharing responsibility with them both stepping forward when needed.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET: A STORYBOOK EDITION OF THE CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, by Valentine Davies Estate and Susanna Leonard Hill, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, Oct. 2, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-9)

For a little girl named Susan, Christmas could be any other day. She doesn’t believe in Santa Claus or magic or miracles of any kind. Then one day she meets Kriss Kringle. As she doubtfully tells him the gifts she most wishes for, deep down Susan finds herself hoping that just maybe, he is the real thing. Based on the original holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street is a heartwarming story about generosity, imagination, and the spirit of Christmas.

Who hasn’t seen the classic movie Miracle on 34^th Street? This picture book version is almost a scene-for-scene carbon copy. The illustrations are beautiful, and this paired-down version still has charm. I think I’ll always prefer the move, but this book is a great introduction to little ones that may not want to watch the film.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS READ-ALONG STORYBOOK AND CD, by Disney Book Group, Disney Press, Sept. 18, 2018, Softcover, $6.99 (ages 4-7)

Follow along in this Read-Along Storybook and journey to a strange and magical world where a young girl named Clara meets a soldier named Phillip, a gang of mice, and regents who preside over the Realms. Complete with word-for-word narration, original character voices, sound effects, and stills from the film itself, there’s no better way to revisit The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Transport back into a world alive with song, dance, and the magic of storytelling!

Does anyone own a CD player anymore? If they do, they probably will enjoy the CD included with this book. Since I only have a CD player on my laptop, I’d have to save it to iTunes and let my daughter listen to it through another device. A digital download option would be nice. Otherwise, this book gives you a fine overall feel for the movie.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS: THE SECRET OF THE REALMS: AN EXTENDED NOVELIZATION, by Disney Book Group, Disney Press, Sept. 18, 2018, Hardcover, $12.99 (ages 8 and up)

This novel not only retells the story from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but half of the book will expand and explore the world of the Walt Disney Studios film with brand-new, exclusive content. Complete with beautiful full-page chapter opener illustrations and never-before-seen details that add new depth to the story.
